Puerto Rico Mission Support

Greetings,

I would like to introduce you to the ministry of a classmate of mine, who is a dear friend and missionary in Puerto Rico, Rev. Brenda Taylor.   Brenda has been a missionary in Puerto Rico since we graduated in 2002.

See more about Brenda and her ministry below.  Brenda lost everything and is currently staying with her friend.

God has impressed upon my heart to help Puerto Rico and put Brenda on my heart. Since hurricane Maria, Brenda and I have been communicating.

This morning she sent the following communication.

Good morning Ken!

I haven’t forgotten about you. I’m going to write you a message via messenger and pray for “blip on the radar screen” while I’m out today that it will get to you. Sending a text will be too long. I’ll tell you first what I know I’ve personally lost. Tomorrow, I’ll find out from my pastor and colleague at church what things she has been asked for by the families of the public housing community we serve and pass on the info.

I spoke with Mariel after church. Our biggest need is what I anticipated-refilling our pantry. We stocked it with staples before the hurricane and almost everything is gone. I don’t think it’s because things aren’t available to buy but rather the lack of internet lines to run bank cards and/or the food stamp cards. Everything has to be purchased with cash. So, whatever support is sent right now we’ll purchase rice, beans, canned meats, pasta, etc.

We were given a shipment of manna meals that we’re going to give away this week along with some hygiene kits. Then, once the pantry is restocked we’ll set up a day for people to come.
Thank you and thank you also to your colleagues and church for considering us! This is a vital way in which we can not only help those in need but we can keep our presence in Monte Hatillo. With our current situation, we are unable to have our kids program on Fridays. It’s too dangerous with no electricity; and it’s super “caliente” right now for us to go inside. So, whatever we can do to serve this community is a huge plus!

I am ok with Walmart but if you are willing to send cash, it would go to my Paypal and would give us more flexibility as to where we buy supplies. There are a few local stores that are actually cheaper than Wal-Mart and we can get more bang for our buck.

Thank you! You also be encouraged. Now that things like gas are more easily available we’ll be able to do more; but your donation, whatever it is, is so critical to our connection with Monte Hatillo. The mother of one of our kids was shot a few days ago. They called her downstairs and just shot her. We don’t know the story and may never know but whatever support we receive to bring light into this dark place is greatly appreciated!

Brenda

Greetings all!

Before I say anything about Hurricane Maria, I want to share some happy news. Yesterday, we packed 75 bags for the homeless and took them to a very needy area called Bario Obrero.
PicsArt_09-18-12.55.41.pngWe went to a plaza that was recently renovated and gave away ALL of our bags in a matter of just a few minutes. I barely got a few pictures before all the bags were gone. It was incredible!
Now, for our incoming hurricane Maria. She is set to arrive Wednesday as a cat 4; and this time, it is extremely likely we will take a direct hit. Maria will come in from the South which is an hour and a half to 2 hours from me. For those unfamiliar with hurricanes, the fear is she will stall in the mountainous terrain like George did. I was not here for George.
As of now, we still have thousands of people without power from Irma and many without running water. We also have refugees from surrounding islands who are going to experience a major hurricane again in just two weeks. I can’t even begin to imagine what they are feeling.
During the storm, I will be staying at the house of my friend Brenda. She is stateside until late Saturday. Because of the structure of my apartment, I would be safe staying here. However, a mutual friend of Brenda and I evacuated from Tortolla and is currently at Brenda’s neighbor’s. Hilda, our friend, will come and stay with me.
Unless internet/cell service is down, I should be able to keep in contact without having to “go off the grid” per say. There is a generator at Brenda’s so we will have power.
After the storm, I will send an email with things that can be done to help support hurricane relief efforts. I can tell you personally that having two hurricanes in two weeks has taken a HUGE financial toll on all of us. So, any financial support is greatly appreciated. I will also emphasize that everyone has been incredible about sharing what we have and any $ helps me and the ones I serve.
